Random Camp Question

I’m writing today from Glen Lake Camp where I’m serving as one of the Deans for our the first High School camp at our United Methodist camping ministry facility in Glen Rose, Texas. {see below for more info on Glen Lake}

I did a fairly good job packing for my week, but I did forget a few things. Most importantly, I forgot my toothbrush [I use an electric one at home so I usually carry one of the old fashioned manual brushes on trips]. I also forgot my soap and shampoo. Luckily, as a Dean, I get to stay in a hotel style room here at camp which has some complimentary hotel style shampoo and soap in the bathrooms, but I really don’t like how I smell by the end of the week when that’s my only option. So today, I ran out to the local grocery store to buy some soap.

I am ok admitting that since I got married, I am a liquid soap with that spongy thingy guy when it comes to my soap, but the local Brookshires here in Glen Rose didn’t have any of the “spongy thingys.” So I did something I had not done in a while.

I bought a bar of soap. [three bars actually... you can't buy just one]

And it got to my thinking…

  • Whatever happened to the prominence of the bar of soap?
  • Do you really get cleaner with the spongy thingy?
  • Have you noticed how much cheaper it is just to use the bar of soap?

I’m interested in some feedback here since my future toiletries purchases seem to be in limbo.

Is anyone else out there still sticking with the old bar of soap?

Do we really think the spongy thingy is that much better?

{If you’ve never been to Glen Lake, it’s a great place that I have been coming to since I was a small kid. I have had the privilege to be involved with Glen Lake over the past three summers serving as one of the Deans for a camp [the one I'm at now], working on the Summer Camp curriculum, and serving as a member of the Board of Directors at camp. It’s a wonderful ministry that I’m honored to be a part of and support.}

  1. Funny, I never thougth I would start my day thinking about soap. I know somewhere there is deeper meaning to this. I will have to spend some time thinking on it!

  2. david,

    As I tried to share with you years ago, you are the only male using a luffa (sp?). Us men still use the bar of soap just as we always have. You only think that the bar of soap has gone the way of the Dodo since you have no other men living at your house.

    I have used Zest since I was a small lad and still proudly claim to be Zestfully clean each morning.

    Yes, you get cleaner with the luffa. But we don’t shower to get clean, we shower out of wanting to hug and kiss our wives.

    Lakehouse is still on in a few weeks, don’t bail.

    Out,
    Phatty

  3. Kimberly is going too deep I think; this is a classic “cleanliness is next to godliness” example! Soap is where’s at in my opinion: cheap and clean. Liquid soap (and accessories) is for smell and softness.

  4. david - i am a woman and i use bar soap…of course i use dove sensitive skin along with using some other soap lotions and junk…but it’s more practical to buy a huge pack of dove soap bars from Sams. i like to think it gets me pretty clean and i really don’t like being stinky. that’s our way in our house!

  5. i’m a man…and i use a “spongy thingy”.

    you get cleaner. plain and simple. every now and again i go back to a bar of soap to remind myself why i use liquid soap/”spongy thingy”. it makes me feel all filmy. yuck.

  6. I don’t bathe any more.

    But if I did, I would use a bar of soap, not that spongy thing. What do you mean the bar of soap has lost its prominence?

    The spongy thing Used to be called a WASH RAG. And required a bar of soap to operate correctly.

    And if I bathed, I would gladly use the free stuff and quit showing my ‘kept man’ side of myself. However, at least you bathe!!!

    I do brush my teeth; with a manly manual toothbrush.

    So I guess, David, you are Abby Normal when it comes to your hygiene (yes, i had to look up the spelling of that one).

    Must be good to be you!

    (Note: I can never get all the suds off from Zest.)

    Heading to the store for a spongy thing now.

  8. I really havent observed what kind of soap other guys use when they take a shower…but Lava and Irish Spring bar soaps are my personal favorites. I only use the spongy thing when I help do the dishes. I suppose I might try the spongy thingee if I spill a bunch of food all over myself.

    And another thing…try going green when you brush your teeth and throw away that electric toothbrush. You are contributing to global warming! That is soooo 1990’s!

  9. I had no idea I would spark so much discussion… But now that Randy has found my blog, I’m afraid the comments are never going to end.

    Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I think I’m going to mix it up a little bit and see if anyone tells e that I stink.
