Sunday last week talked about sinning unintentionally. How do you sin unintentionally?

    Sherry,

I think that’s a great question because we often make the connection between our “intention” and the idea of “sin.” I think that’s the influence of some of what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. He talked about that sin doesn’t begin with murder, but with anger, that the sin of adultery first begins as the sin of lust. I think it’s really important to have clarity on our intentions. However, that’s not the framework of the Old Testament understanding of it. It’s a very rigid system of regulations which sought to bring order to our lives. We might think of it this way.

Have you ever found yourself driving above the speed limit but didn’t know it? You thought it was a 55 mile an hour zone, but it turned out to be 45. Or have you ever made a mistake on filing your income taxes? You didn’t intend to defraud anyone, but because of your mistake, you unknowingly did so. Or to make it a little more personal, have you ever hurt anyone’s feelings and didn’t realize it until much later? [I'm guessing you haven't, but I know I have!] I think all of those are examples of “unintentional” sin that would be in line with what we read last Sunday was talking about.
