The Church as it Should Be…
Yesterday’s post on the quote I had to cut from last weekend’s message sparked a really great comment that I wanted to lift up today, and in response, share just a few words about my dreams/vision for what the Church should be…
Here’s the comment from yesterday’s post.
David, I must admit that I really haven’t chewed on your comment except for “making the church a place of healing for broken relationships”. At times it seems that THE(meaning the whole Christian community) church is the last place we can admit to broken relationships. How many times do we hear of a divorce, after the fact. How many times do we hear of a financial problem that has destroyed a family, after the fact. The same can be true of adultery, addiction, depression and many more. We as a community of believers need to be sure we have a safe place where it’s OK to not be perfect. Then there can be healing. I think that’s what the broken see in Jesus – safety and acceptance. A place to heal. Thank you for always reaching out to those who hurt.
In response to that, I wanted to share with you something I actually put down in writing in February of 2006. For a message I was doing for our High School ministry at the time, I shared this list of “dreams” I have for the Church.
A place where you can be yourself because you are surrounded by people who honestly care about you…
A place that keeps your secrets, but doesn’t allow your secrets to control your life…
A place that cares more about you being healthy than being happy…
A place that truly listens when you talk, encourages you when you are tired, and genuinely celebrates your success…
A place that won’t allow you to be fake because they believe there is great beauty in who you really are…
A place that shares your dreams instead of asking questions like, is that practical?
A place where your deep hurts can be shared and healing can be experienced…
A place where you can be you…
A place where your mistakes are forgiven and your faults don’t disqualify you from being a part of something extraordinary…
Finally, let me pose this question to you today: What are your dreams for the Church?
Leave me a comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
